The British public has developed a newfound appreciation for truck drivers and logistics workers after two years of supply shortages caused by Covid-19 and Brexit, a survey has found.

The findings suggest that the trials of Brexit and the global pandemic have sensitised the public to the value of the truckers and warehouse workers that make up the hidden backbone of an economy built on just-in-time supply networks.

More than two-thirds of the public agreed that delivery drivers “deserve more respect than they get”, according to a nationally weighted survey conducted by Public First, a consultancy that specialises in public attitudes.

At the same time, 65 per cent of respondents said their respect for HGV drivers had increased over the past six months, compared with 46 per cent saying the same for teachers and 39 per cent for police officers.

Almost half the public also said that they “think more” about the process by which goods are transported and delivered to them than they did a few years ago.

Tim Morris, the chief executive of the Major Ports Group, said the findings spoke to the fact that the public had learnt to appreciate the resilience of a class of workers that were historically far from public consciousness.

Public patience with logistical challenges is likely to be needed for some time yet, according to another report released on Tuesday by project44, a data platform for shipping and logistics providers.

The group warned that China’s zero-Covid policy, which has led to industrial and port shutdowns, is likely to see shipping delays continue “well into 2022”. It found that the average time a ship from China was delayed beyond its scheduled arrival had increased from four to six days in December.

Trade groups echoed Morris’s call for the government to build on the momentum that the industry had developed during the pandemic — which saw the UK experience a peak shortage of 70,000 drivers thanks to a combination of Covid-19 and new post-Brexit immigration curbs.

Alex Veitch, the deputy policy director at Logistics UK, a trade association, said that the pandemic had highlighted the value of logistics workers and driven up wages and recruitment levels. “Let’s face it, no one thought about where toilet rolls came from until there weren’t any in the shops,” he said.

Shane Brennan, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, said the logistics industry needed a new generation of recruits, not least because “the short term crises of the recent months are as nothing to the scale of the challenges ahead as we adapt our supply chains to a net zero world”.
